Is the role of the business weekly changing?
27/06/2011Peter Preston , former editor of The Guardian, highlighted a significant point in this week’s Observer newspaper. In analysing the success of the Daily Mail’s online version, which attracts over 4 million visitors a day, he concludes that the role of print is that of ” news analysis and explanation with attitude’.
If that can be said of a national daily newspaper then should this apply to weekly business magazines?
We all love print and I think we will continue to do so for many years but the constant demand for up to date news and information suits the web better and in the commercial property sector we have witnessed this with the success of EGi and PropertyWeek.com. The soon to be launched online only Costar News will add to the news sources that we can draw from.
Let’s face it, the days of us getting our news fix on a Friday or Saturday are long gone. There will still be scope for hard hitting print news exclusives but for the most part the weekly trade magazine should provide news analysis which we can apply to our business and those spicy editorials that set the market buzzing.
