Metrocentre, owned by Capital Shopping Centres (CSC), has been granted planning permission for its MetrOasis development which will create almost 15,000 sq ft catering space and bring new concepts to Gateshead.
MetrOasis will sit between Metrocentre and the adjacent retail park and include a mix of restaurants in up to five units. The redevelopment of the former Esso petrol station is already 75% under offer.
MetrOasis will create 230 new jobs while the development itself will support 50 construction jobs in the region. It will also improve connectivity between Metro Retail Park and the centre.
Martin Ellis, construction director for CSC, said: “We are delighted to have received planning permission for MetrOasis. The development will strengthen the catering offer as well as improve pedestrian links between Metrocentre and Metro Retail Park and is a key part of our continued evolution of the centre.”
Work is expected to begin onsite in November with completion due for autumn 2012.
